Your computer isn't really your computer until you customize it to the way you like to work. That means everything from installing the programs you like to use, changing your desktop wallpaper, changing the Windows color scheme and customizing the Windows Start Menu. In this tutorial, we'll look at the latter.

- To add a program to the pinned items area at the top of the Start Menu, right click on the program's icon and click on "Pin to Start Menu."
- To customize the rest of the Start Menu, right-click on the Start button and click on Properties.
- Here you can choose between the default Vista Start Menu and the Classic Start Menu, and you can uncheck the boxes so that recently-used programs and files not appear on the Start Menu.
- Click on the Customize... button at the upper-right for more options.
- At the top is a list of items and options for the Start Menu. The Display as menu option makes a menu of the item's contents appear when you click on the item, instead of opening a new window.
- Below you can change the number of items that appear in the Recent Programs area.
- At the bottom you can configure which programs, if any, appear as the Internet and E-mail link on the Start Menu.
- When you're done, click on OK, and then OK again.
