Windows Vista can be customized to better suit the way you work. The system tray can be modified so that it shows the icons you need quick access to like the system volume and clock while hiding those you don't often need. Here, we'll demonstrate how to customize your system tray in Windows Vista with tips that also translate to other versions of Windows.

Show Notes

- Right-click on the clock and click on Properties.

- To turn the Clock, Volume, Network, and Power system icons on or off, check or uncheck their boxes and click on Apply.

- To configure other icons, click on Customize... above.

- Click on the Behavior drop-down next to the right of an icon to change its settings:
- Show will make the icon always appear when its program is running.
- Hide will make it always hidden.
- Hide when inactive will hide an icon in the tray when it's not doing anything.

- To save your settings, click on OK, and then OK again.

- To momentarily see icons that are hidden, click on the small arrow next to the notification area.
