Windows Live Messenger looks pretty good right out of the box, but there are lots of things that you can do to tweak, customize and personalize it. You can determine how the program looks and acts: Customize your sounds, colors, alerts, security settings and more. You can set a default download folder, block specific users, and check on your Internet connection. You can even add custom emoticons or change the background picture to give your Windows Live Messenger a new look.

Download the latest version of Windows Live Messenger and follow along with our tutorial series

- In Windows Live Messenger click the menu, select Tools, and then click on Options.

- You can customize what people see when they see you online.

- Have Windows Live Messenger start when Windows starts, or choose not to.

- Customize alerts and sounds.

- Setup options for file transfers between other users.

- Click on the menu, select Actions and then move down to Personalize Messenger.

- Many of the options, like Backgrounds, will take you to the site Kiwee where you can pick new backgrounds, new emoticons and lots more.

- Customize your Windows Live Messenger to have it look, feel, and act just how you want.
