work off a different premise. The key is that you have certain people you want to receive mail from. All other email senders have to prove themselves first.

challenge/response anti-spam system

works by challenging each unknown email you receive.

- If the sender is legitimate they will respond to the challenge and they will only have to do this once.

Challenge/response

systems utilize "whitelists" for your friends and contacts you want to receive email from.

- They also utilize "blacklists" for email addresses or domains that you want to block.

- Since most spam is sent by robot machines they can't respond to the challenge and you never have to see those emails.

- To new friends, who aren't in your whitelist, they simply respond to the challenge and they are added to your whitelist.
