How to find your Windows workgroup

Your Windows workgroup is assigned during the installation of Windows. The standard defaults for this have been either "WORKGROUP" or "MSHOME". Home networks run better when all the computers are part of the same workgroup. Here's how to find your workgroup name and change it if you like.

- The workgroup is assigned during the installation of Windows.

- Default workgroups are called WORKGROUP or MSHOME.

- Workgroup names shouldn't have more than 15 characters.

- Workgroup names also shouldn't have spaces in them.

- To find your workgroup name right-click on My Computer and select Properties.

- In the dialog click on the Computer Name tab.

- On this tab is shows the name for your computer and the workgroup it's
in.

- Click Change to change either the computer name, the workgroup name, or both.

- If you change the workgroup name and click OK you'll be welcomed to the new workgroup and asked to reboot.

- Another way to find the workgroup name is to double-click on My Network Places.

- Click on Find workgroup computers and the name of the workgroup will be shown in the address bar.
