Cloud applications

are like Gmail are great. They let you access your data anywhere, on any Internet-connected computer. However, they sometimes lack the convenience of desktop applications in that you have to actively check for new email messages by logging in.

Gmail Notifier

helps to bridge the gap from

desktop to cloud

by alerting you to new messages as they arrive.

- Go to The Gmail Notifier site for more information and the download for Windows 2K/XP and Mac.

- Download, then install. Make sure you indicate whether you want the program to run when you start up your machine, and if you want to use it for outgoing mail.

- Enter your Gmail username and password, and that finishes the install process.

- You'll see a little envelope icon in your system tray that will alert you when you get new emails. It will show you the subject, sender, and a short snippet.

- Right click on the icon to access your inbox, configure options, and to see the notifications again.

- Mac users may want to check out Google+Growl, which is an addon to Notifier that announces upcoming Google calendar events in addition to Gmail messages.
