Windows Vista includes a software firewall that is much improved over that of Windows XP. It allows you to easily manage which programs are allowed to connect to the internet and can also block incoming requests. Windows Firewall acts as a first line of defence so don't turn it off!

- Go to the Control Panel and type "firewall" in the search box; click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
- Click On or Off to enable or disable the firewall. The option to block all incoming connections provides added security but may interfere with some internet connected programs.
- The Exceptions tab lets allow certain programs through the firewall. Checking the Notify me box will make Windows notify you when a new program tries to make a connection.
- On the Advanced tab you can enable or disable the firewall for different network connections, or restore all of the firewall settings to their defaults.
- Click on OK to save your settings.
