When Microsoft does an update, it generally

forces your Windows computer to reboot

. This is particularly inconvenient if you have something running, like a backup. If you want you can prevent this auto reboot and opt to reboot manually. Here's how.

- This will involve editing the Windows Registry. It's perfectly safe if you follow the tutorial exactly, but if you don't feel comfortable, don't do it.

- Click on Start.

- In the search box at the bottom of the Start menu just type regedit and press Enter.

- The Windows Registry editor will open.

- Move through the Registry and go to this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Polices\Microsoft\Windows

- When you get to the Windows designator just highlight it.

- On the right-side right-click and select New and then Key.

- Give the new key a name like WinUpdate.

- Over on the left right-click on the WinUpdate you just created.

- Once again click New and then Key. Give the key a name like AutoUpdate.

- Highlight the AutoUpdate key over on the left and on the right side right-click

- Click New and then click DWORD (32-bit)

- Gave the new DWORD this value: NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers

- Type it exactly as it's shown.

- Now just right-click the DWORD and click Modify.

- Where it says Value change the 0 (zero) to a 1 and click OK.

- Close out of Regedit and restart your computer for the change to take effect.

- The next time Windows gets an update your computer will not restart if you are logged in.
