For basic image editing, you may not need to shell out for commercial image editing software. The open source (read: free to use) image editor IrfanView can take care of many of the standard image edits. Here, we'll look at resizing pictures with IrfanView. Later on, we'll get more in-depth with this powerful piece of software.

When you're working with a picture in the image-editing application IrfanView, you can resize the image you're working with in a few simple steps:
- Load up your image in IrfanView.
- Under the Image menu, choose Resize/Resample.
- Select the option to resize using a percentage of the original size.
- Type in the percentage you'd like to resize to, and click OK.
- If you want to keep the original, save your resized image with a different name.
