With the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft included Windows Defender in the standard installation. Windows Defender is available as a free download for Windows XP users. We'll show you how to set it up so it runs the way you want it to.

- In Windows Vista click on Start then on Control Panel and then on Windows Defender.
- In Windows Defender click on Tools and then on Options.
- Set when you want Windows Defender to run. We suggest Daily.
- Set the time you want it to run. Sometime when you're not likely to be using the computer is best.
- Set it to do a quick scan or a full scan.
- Check the box to tell Windows Defender to check for new definitions before scanning.
- Other options will be covered in other tutorials.
