How to tweak the disc autorun feature in Windows

When you put a CD or DVD into the appropriate drive on your computer and then close the drawer, Windows will often immediately launch an application associated with that disc: An installation program if it's an install disc, or your CD player, if it's an audio CD, for example. This can be frustrating if the task that is autorun isn't what you wanted to do. There are ways to prevent your system from bringing up the autorun dialogue when you insert a disc.

To disable autorun once; useful when you want to rip an audio CD as opposed to playing it, for example:

- Hold down the Shift key when inserting the CD

If you're looking for a longer-term solution, however, you can disable or customize the Windows autorun feature:

- Right-click on the CD or DVD drive icon.

- Select Properties.

- Choose the AutoPlay tab.

- Choose how you want Windows to autorun the disc. There are options here for picture discs, audio discs, mixed content discs etc.

OR

- Turn off autorun entirely.
