may want to check outchompSMS
. It's available as a free application for your Android, but has a paid version with ads removed. With the application, you get your choice of two widgets that will always show youhow many messages you have

- Download chompSMS.
- Once installed, you'll find it in your list of applications.
- You'll also find two widgets.
- Hold your finger down in a blank area of the screen until you get the menu. Select Widgets.
- There's chompSMS Icon and chompSMS Big.
- The icon widget will display the number of messages you have waiting.
- If you tap the icon, it opens the program.
- If you try the SMS Big widget, you get a larger display that gives you more options.
- You can see new messages, delete them and more.
- If you tap the white balloon to reply, it will open the program.
- The free version of chompSMS is ad supported but you can remove them for $3.99.
