How to use power line networking

Pt. 4 of 5 | 3:49 |

How to set up a home network

Thursday September 9, 2010
An alternative to

hard wired networks

or

wireless networks

that you can use when you

set up a home network

is called

power line networking

. Power line networking uses your home's power lines to

connect your devices

, provided those devices are each connected to a power line receiver. This is a great alternative if your devices are too far from your router.

Show Notes

- If using a wired connection isn't possible and the device you want to connect is out of wireless range, you do have another option called power line networking.

- Power line networking uses the power lines in your home instead of an Ethernet cable or a wireless connection.

- You will first need power line networking hardware, which must be used in pairs or groups of at least two.

- One of the units must be plugged in near your router and must be wired directly to it by Ethernet cable.

- The other unit plugs in near the device you want to connect to your network and must connect to that device by Ethernet cable.

- It's worth noting that you cannot use power line networking with power bars as the signal will be disrupted.

- Also, it's possible that a signal can be sent through power lines from apartment to apartment or from house to house, so be aware of that.
