Windows Firewall protects you from threats that try to sneak into your computer without any action from you. Antivirus and antispyware software help to protect against threats that you may have unwittingly taken some part in getting by opening an infected email or visiting a bad Web page. In this tutorial we'll show you how Windows Firewall works and how to configure it.

- Click on Start, then on Settings, and then on Control Panel.
- In Control Panel double-click on Windows Firewall.
- On the General tab make sure the firewall is on.
- The only time it should be off is if you're running some 3rd party firewall software.
- In most cases you won't need to use the exceptions option.
- Click on the Exceptions tab to see the list of programs that are allowed to pass through the firewall.
- You can add a program to be let through Windows firewall by clicking on Add Program and selecting the program you want.
- You can also add a specific port if a program tells you it needs a certain port to be open.
- Listings can be edited, but in most cases this isn't necessary.
- Some listings can be deleted by highlighting the desired entry and clicking the Delete button.
- Some listings are protected and cannot be deleted.
- The Advanced tab contains items on network connection settings, security logging, ICMP and default settings.
- In most cases you won't need to do anything on the advanced tab.
- Click OK, close out of Control Panel, and you're done.
