- Click on Start, then on Settings, and then on Control Panel.

- In Control Panel double-click on Windows Firewall.

- On the General tab make sure the firewall is on.

- The only time it should be off is if you're running some 3rd party firewall software.

- Click on the Exceptions tab to see the list of programs that are allowed to pass through the firewall.

- You can add a program to be let through Windows firewall by clicking on Add Program and selecting the program you want.

- You can also add a specific port if a program tells you it needs a certain port to be open.

- Listings can be edited, but in most cases this isn't necessary.

- Some listings can be deleted by highlighting the desired entry and clicking the Delete button.

- Some listings are protected and cannot be deleted.

- The Advanced tab contains items on network connection settings, security logging, ICMP and default settings.

- In most cases you won't need to do anything on the advanced tab.

- Click OK, close out of Control Panel, and you're done.
