Show Notes

Good audio is a big part of

making a good video

. Even if the visuals are crystal clear, the video will come across as low quality if it suffers from poor audio and viewers will be distracted. That's why shooting video on a smartphone or iPhone isn't a great idea: the default microphones simply aren't capable of recording quality audio in most situations. The iPhone does have some accessories that will allow you to

capture better quality audio

, however.

Better video cameras will boast better audio recording options. The Flip Video Ultra HD or Mino HD don't have the best sound quality to start but through the FlipPORT various audio accessories can be attached, including the Blue Mic Mikey or the Scosche Freedom Mic. The latter is a wireless option that allows for more mobility between the subject and the camera.

An even better option is to buy a digital camcorder. If you are in the market to buy one, check to see that the models you are interested in have an audio in or microphone port. This will allow you to plug in other microphones ranging from wired mics of average quality to wireless mics that are high quality but also very expensive.

Some cameras have their own interfaces or hotshoes that accept input from certain devices. This means that you'll be able to get a specific product like a microphone that plugs right into the camera. This is similar to what might be found on digital SLR camera models. Unfortunately for point-and-shoot owners, there generally isn't any way to connect audio accessories to point-and-shoot cameras.
