Messaging using iOS 5

Pt. 5 of 10 | 2:02 |

How do I use iOS 5

Wednesday October 12, 2011
In this episode we're going to show you the

iMessage application

that's been introduced in iOS 5. This improved messaging app shares some features with the ever-popular BBM, the BlackBerry messaging app, in that it can send messages over data, it shows when messages have been successfully delivered and shows when a contact is responding to your message.

Show Notes

Users of iOS have always been able to send messages back and forth between contacts using the aptly named Messages application. Now, with iOS 5, users can open up iMessage to keep in contact with people. The new iMessage application is partially tied to the user's Apple ID, allowing messages to be sent over Wi-Fi or 3G networks.

Tap the iMessage icon to open it up, then tap the new message icon in the upper-right. You can tap a contact's name to start sending a message or type their phone number. If the contact that you're messaging isn't using an Apple device running iOS 5 then you'll see that your message will go out as a plain text. If they are using an iOS 5 device, you'll see the message box read iMessage and things will work somewhat differently.

As before, enter your message then tap Send. If your contact is running iOS 5 then you'll see when they're responding as indicated by an ellipsis (...) sign. You can also tap the camera icon to add a photo either from your camera roll or a completely new picture. Another new feature is that you'll see the word Delivered under a message that has been successfully sent.
