Online safety and security in Firefox

Pt. 10 of 10 | 2:01 |

Firefox 101

Friday December 19, 2008
Firefox offers a good balance of security and convenience. When visiting a web site, for example, your banking site, you can view the security certificate and other information associated with that site.

For sites that don't contain quite such personal and personally identifying information, you can opt to have Firefox remember passwords for you. This is convenient but not recommended for things like online banking, sensitive email accounts and so on.

Show Notes

- In the smart location bar, you'll see a small image icon beside the text URL of the site you're on. This is called a "favicon" and usually consists of the company's logo.

- Clicking on the favicon in the address bar brings up security information for the site.

- Here, you can make sure the site you're visiting is trusted and that it's verified. This is important as "phishing" sites are made to look identical to the sites they're spoofing.

- One the Security tab, clicking on the More information button gives a more detailed look at the security settings of the page, including whether you've saved passwords, what cookies the site is storing on your PC.

- In the Permissions tab, you can set site-specific options: block or allow pop-ups for this site, block or allow images, cookies, extensions and themes.

- The Media tab allows you to see links for all of the images and other media on the site.

Saving and storing passwords:

- The first time you enter a password for a site, Firefox will display a bar asking whether you want it to remember the password.
