Parental controls can be a very important tool for parents. The Internet is an amazing place full of knowledge, wonder and communication unlimited. It can also be a dangerous place with hackers, phishers and even predators. Fortunately your Mac has built-in Parental Controls that you can set to help keep your family safe. This is part 1 of 2.

Show Notes

- Open System Preferences by click on the icon in the Dock or by clicking on the Apple menu and selecting System Preferences.

- Under System click on Parental Controls.

- On the left pick the user you want to set up Parental Controls for.

- Click System.

- If you like you can provide the user with a simplified version of Finder.

- You can also allow only selected applications.

- You also have the option of limiting use of printers, DVDs, passwords and the Dock.

- Click on the Content tab where you can limit access to certain words in the Mac OS X dictionary.

- Here you can also put Website restrictions in place.

- Click on Mail and iChat.

- Here you can limit who your children can chat with and exchange email with.
