- The motherboard and CPU are central to your computer build so choose wisely.
- There are two major processor brands right now, Intel and AMD. Both are quality brands with quality products.
- Getting the most expensive processor would be nice, but isn't necessary. A low-level processor may be adequate depending on your needs.
- The processor that you choose must match your motherboard with its pin configuration. Check to see that your hardware is compatible.
- You'll also want to see how many slots your motherboard has so that you know it can handle the rest of the hardware that you want to install.
- Some of the motherboards that you get may have integrated audio or video, which would negate the need for a video or sound card.
- Get a clean, static-free surface to take the hardware out on. Remove the motherboard from the packaging and separate the cables and connectors.
- Carefully remove the insert located in the CPU slot. Replace it with your new CPU and carefully secure it in place. Don't force it.
- Your CPU will often come with a cooling fan that will need some thermal paste to seal it to the CPU. Some fans will have thermal tape already on them.
- Carefully press the fan down until it clicks into place, then plug the fan into the motherboard.
