Reinstalling Windows XP
Monday June 1, 2009
Over time your computer, like your car, doesn't run as well as it once
did. You may do all the things you're supposed to like defragment the
hard drive, clean the registry, remove junk files and so on. Often,
after a period of time, it's not your maintenance that's the problem.
More likely your copy of Windows has become corrupted. Through power
outages, power surges, turning the computer off improperly, and many
other factors. You don't need to clean your PC and you don't need to
repair Windows. What's needed is a "clean install" of Windows XP. Here's how!

Show Notes
- Over time your copy of Windows becomes corrupted.
- This occurs for a variety of reasons including power outages, power
surges, and more.
- Even if you do all the maintenance you should, like defragmenting,
cleaning the Registry, and the like, at some point it won't make a
difference.
- When Windows stops functioning properly and you can feel that it's
slowed down it may well be time for a fresh start.
- Totally reinstalling Windows, or any operating system, is called a
"clean install".
- A clean install gets your copy of Windows exactly the way it was the
day you got it.
- Doing a "repair" isn't good enough to solve this problem so only
reinstalling will do.
- I'll also show you how to keep all your data from your sluggish PC.
- When you're finished your PC will be running faster, your data will be
in place, and you'll get more done with less frustration.

Not for the faint-hearted ...
1st - Make a thorough pile of what you need on hand, before you start
Don't forget the Windows CDs/DVDs and Certificate of Authenticity [COA-License] sticker, Service Pack CDs, all Program CDs and registration numbers.
2nd - Make a thorough list of what you need to back up, where it all is, and how to save it.
Contrary to the video, you don't need to save EVERYTHING to CD/DVD, spare hard drive, flash drive etc - Just the important data such as your word processor files, autocad drawings, photos, videos, email files and settings, favorites/bookmarks, plus any Microsoft _Net Framework or other program or utility downloads you may have, and all of your hardware peripheral drivers not included in Windows [webcam, all-in-one printer, video box, wireless modem, etc].
There is a great freeware program to ferret out and save the Desktop, My Documents, Favorites/Bookmarks, Email files and settings, and more [Fab's AutoBackup 2.2], and one to save the drivers [DriverMax 4.4].
Hopefully you saved all of the misc data files in My Documents [which includes My Photos, My Videos, etc] - If not, you may have to do Start - Search - *.doc, *.txt, *.wpd, *.bmp, *.jpg, etc to locate any stray document or photo files etc stored elsewhere.
Happy hunting ...

The biggest problems are corruption by adware/spyware programs, defective programming, and unclean uninstalls.
Usually doing an "XP Repair Install" [http://camtech2000.net/Pages/XP_Repair.htm]
as well as running "Ad-Aware AE" and "Spybot Search and Destroy" will fix it.
But sometimes it is too messed up for even that, so a "fresh install" is necessary. Nothing like a clean, freshly formatted harddrive to spruce things up!
