Pt. 7 of 10 | 2:20 |

Understanding your Home Network Router

Tuesday July 21, 2009
We've talked about securing your wireless network in a number of ways. There are times, however, when you may want to

restrict access to the Internet

for those who already have access to the network. You can

block access to certain keywords or specific Web sites

or

block kids' Internet access after a certain time

and much more. You can do all of this via access restrictions in your router.

Show Notes

-

Access Restrictions

are disabled by default.

- They provide a great way to block Internet access for specific periods of time, certain days, and certain computers.

- In the Linksys router we click on Access Restrictions.

- If you have a different brand it will still have options in the router setup to limit access.

-

Enable access restrictions

.

- You can elect to block access on certain days and at certain times.

- Many routers allow you to create multiple access restriction profiles.

- This makes it easy to switch from one profile to another.

- In our example we restricted access on weekdays from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM when we wanted the children to be doing homework.

- You can

indicate the IP addresses of only the computers you want to block

.

- In this scenario the adults could have access while the children do not.
