Finding your real-world friends, colleagues and business contacts and extending a request to link up on LinkedIn is a great way to network. We'll show you how to find people you know and make contact, delving into the Advanced Search to make sure the John Smith you're looking for is the John Smith you find. You can also look for jobs, post questions to the LinkedIn community, search for companies, check references and more.

Show Notes

- Click on the arrow beside People in the top-left of the LinkedIn page and select Advanced Search.

- Input some information about the contact and click Search. The more info you can provide, the more refined your search results will be.

- Using the Reference Search tab, you can check a job applicant's references within LinkedIn.

- Clicking on Jobs and choosing Advanced Job Search gives a refined list of potential jobs that have been advertised on LinkedIn.

- You can also post job ads to LinkedIn for a fee.

- Using the Answers search functions, you can look for answers to questions that have been posted to LinkedIn or post your own queries.

- You can use the Companies link to search for specific companies on LinkedIn.
