How do I use a Sonos

Tuesday August 16, 2011
Once you've got your Sonos system products together, your next step is to install them and go through the set up process. This can differ depending on what Sonos devices you ended up purchasing, and how you want to connect to your local network, but we'll walk you through the process regardless of whether you've got one zone player or a number of them and a Sonos Bridge.

Once you have the products that you need to start using Sonos system, you'll have to go through the setup process. If you have one zone player and aren't planning on using a Sonos Bridge to connect to your network, then you'll first start by plugging in your zone player. Next, you'll connect your player to the home network using an Ethernet cable. This might mean that you have to position your zone player closer to your home network or else you may need a longer Ethernet cable, or perhaps even power line networking adapters.

Barring those ideas, you can always use the Sonos Bridge. This can be connected directly to your home network to create a mesh network that Sonos devices can connect to. If you are going to use the Sonos Bridge, you'll need to connect it first, starting by connecting the power and then connecting it to the network via Ethernet cable.

Once that's done, you'll want to install the Sonos desktop controller software on whatever computer that you want to control your audio playback with. This can be PC or Mac, desktop or laptop, so long as it's on the same network as your Sonos gear. Go through the setup process for the software and then you'll need to set up your player(s). This basically just involves connecting your zone player or Bridge to the network by pressing the appropriate buttons.

If you didn't use the Sonos Bridge during this process, then you are basically ready to start using your Sonos system. If you did, however, you'll need to manually add a new device. In the software, go to Zones, then Add a Sonos Component. Follow the steps, name your device and you're good to go.
