When you're trying to explain an error message, show your geeky friend a strange quirk that keeps cropping up on your computer, when you're trying to share information from a web page or save it for posterity, it's true that a picture is worth a thousand words. Snagit from Techsmith is a great way to capture all or a portion of your computer screen. We'll show you how.

- Download Snagit and install the program on your computer.
- With Snagit running, select the type of screen capture you'd like to do.
- With Snagit running, select the type of screen capture you'd like to do.
- Region allows you to select a portion of the screen using a crosshairs.
- Window lets you capture the visible part of an open window or web browser.
- Full screen lets you capture everything on your monitor as one image.
- Scrolling window lets you capture the entire contents of a web page, even the data that's not currently visible on the screen.
- Hit the big red Capture button. Depending on the type of screen capture you're performing, your experience may be different from that shown here. The steps remain largely unchanged though.
- In our region capture example, select the portion of the screen you'd like to capture by clicking and dragging the red selection box.
- Release the mouse button to complete the capture. Your image will open in the Snagit image editor.
- Save your image in the file type and with the name that you want to use.
