How Do I? Using Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the Nexus S

Wednesday February 9, 2011
While it's not capable of HD video recording, the Nexus S running Android 2.3 Gingerbread does a good job of capturing the moment in still or video. With front and rear cameras and an improved Gallery, it's easy too. We take a close look at the cameras on the Nexus S and offer some practical tips for taking better photos... as well as where to find them after you hit the shutter button.

Front and rear cameras
The Nexus S has both a front (VGA, 0.3 MP) camera and a rear 5MP cam with LED flash.
In camera mode, tap the icons on the right of the viewfinder to change the picture resolution, exposure value, focus, scene mode and to apply some effects. These options change according to which camera you're using; many aren't available when using the front camera. Select to geotag photos, change the white balance and flash setting or switch between cameras.

Video recording on the Nexus S
Slide the switch up from camera mode to enter video mode. You can record from either the front or rear cameras, but you can't switch between them while recording. Across the right-hand side, you'll see options for effects, white balance, video light and frame rate.

Photo and video Gallery
To find your photos and videos, tap the thumbnail in the top right of the screen. Or, find the Gallery app in your applications listing. If you use the Gallery a lot, you might want to toss a shortcut onto one of your homescreens.

Any pictures stored on the phone will appear under Camera. You can see any pics you've downloaded in the Download folder. You'll also see all pictures that are connected with your Google account: Dropbox, Picasa, Blogger and so on.

Sharing photos and videos
In your Gallery, it's easy to share photos and videos to Facebook, Twitter, via email or MMS to just about any service you subscribe to and have an app for. Simply hit the share button and choose the method of sharing. Sharing options (like inputting captions or tags) will change depending on the sharing method.
