Taking the long view
The default view for Google Maps is, appropriately enough, a map. However, there are other useful view modes to choose from. Molly McDonald explains how to set view modes, save and edit way points as well as how to tell Google Maps where you want to set your default location.

- Choose from the different view modes by clicking their respective buttons in the top-right of the Map window.
To zoom in or out
- Use the slider bar on the left hand side of the Map window.
- Double click a point on the map to zoom in.
- Use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out.
- The search area at the top of the screen allows you to instantly go to a point of interest and will automatically center the map on that point.
- In the left-hand navigation, you can see pictures of the area, where available.
- You can also see user-create map overlays that have been created for that area.
- The mini-map on the bottom-right of the screen gives a visual reference for panning the main map.
- Clicking on the arrow beside the search bar, you can tell Google Maps to automatically save any location you search for.
- Click on Edit saved locations to add, delete, rename or label your locations.
- Click on the small box beside an entry to make that the default location. Whenever you start Google Maps when signed in to your Google account, it will auto center on your default location.
