If you're an App Store developer who feels you've found a loophole in Apple's draconian
App Store policies
, think again. Recently,Apple made a sudden move and pulled over 5,000 apps it deems inappropriate
. The catch is, these apps were approved previously, leading many people to ask, "what gives?" but perhaps no one louder than the App Store developers for whom this move affects directly.Download this episode now
Show Notes
- Over 5,000 applications have been removed.
New criteria exists that includes the following edict from Apple:
1. No images of women in bikinis
2. No images of men in bikinis
3. No skin
4. No silhouettes
5. No sexual connotations or innuendo.
6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing
7. No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content
- It would seem, however, that these rules don't apply if you're a best-selling publication.
- We found, and were able to download, the Sports Illustrated 2010 Swimsuit Issue.
- They look like bikinis to us.
- The Playboy app is also still available.

Thanks Mary. A lot of people around the Internet, including myself, agree with you. It is a bit of hypocrisy there when the new "standard" isn't standard for everyone. A company that legitimately sells bathing suits had their app removed, yet SI and Playboy are alive and well in the App store. I think the flak over this move will continue for a bit.
