The iPhone 3G makes sending and receiving SMS or text messages a quick, effective and generally inexpensive way to communicate. These ~140 character messages should be short, sweet and to the point but can also relay a lot of information in a small message.

- To access the SMS application on the iPhone 3G, tap the shortcut on the dock or on your home screen.
- Select a contact from your list or punch in a cell phone number.
- To send text messages internationally, hold the 0 key for a couple of seconds to get a + sign, then enter the country code, area code and phone number.

- When you receive a text message, a number will appear beside the SMS icon. This indicates the number of unread text messages.
