A useful feature available on many

Android phones

is the ability to

create Wi-Fi hotspots

. This feature is available on any Android handset running Android 2.2 or better, so long as your wireless carrier allows it. Once you create a Wi-Fi hotspot, you'll be able to connect to it from your other

mobile devices

.

Show Notes

- Android phones running Android 2.2 or better can be used to create Wi-Fi hotspots. Some wireless carriers do disable this service, however.

- To check the version of Android that you are running go to Settings and then tap About phone. You'll see your Android version about three quarters down.

- To create a Wi-Fi hotspot, go to Settings again and tap Wireless & networks. Next, tap Tethering & portable hotspot.

- From this menu, tap Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings. Now, tap Configure Wi-Fi hotspot.

- Now, you'll need to give your network a name. This is the name that will be displayed to anyone joining your network.

- Select a security setting. We recommend using WPA2 PSK.

- Next, choose a password that's at least eight characters long. Tap Show password to see the characters that you're typing.

- Back in Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings, tap the box next to Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to turn on your hotspot. You'll see a blue Wi-Fi icon when your hotspot is active.
