Gmail for Beginners

Gmail allows users to get their hands dirty and tweak everything from what language Gmail uses for display and spell checking, which news clips appear across the top of the page to how many email messages are displayed on each page of your inbox.

- Click on Account Settings in the upper right corner.
- To select a different language, select the language from the pull-down Language menu (default is English (US)).
- Select how many email messages to show on a page using the Maximum page size pull-down menu.
- Turn keyboard shortcuts off or on by selecting the appropriate radio button.
- If you wish, choose Select a picture under the My picture menu to upload a photo or other image to associate with your account. Other Gmail users will be able to see this picture.
- You can choose to input a signature, covered in Getting started with Gmail Part 3.
- Select whether or not to show Personal level indicators. These are an easy way to see whether a message is being sent to a you as part of a mailing list, to you directly along with other recipients or sent only to you at a glance.
- If you're taking a holiday or otherwise wish to set up an email auto-responder, see Getting started with Gmail Part 3.
- Under Outgoing message encoding, select Use Unicode (UTF-8) to ensure your email can be read by all recipients.
- Consider opting for the Always use https under Browser connection if you plan to often access your Gmail account at a coffee shop or internet cafe.
- To send email from within Gmail where the From: address is other than your Gmail address, choose Add another email address under Send mail as. You will have to enter a verification code or respond to an email delivered to the other email address for Gmail to confirm that it's your own.
