Show Notes
- In this video, we'll explain how to find and replace your hard drive.
- Unlike RAM, the hard drive stores long-term information such as files and programs. These are stored even when the computer is turned off.
- The hard drive is connected to the motherboard by one of two different cables, though some computers might use both types of connections.
- IDE is a ribbon-like cable that is wide and commonly used in older models.
- SATA is a smaller cable that is commonly used in newer models and is a faster connection.
- There should also be another cable leading directly from the hard drive to the power supply.
- To remove the drive from the case, first disconnect the cables from the hard drive.
- Remove the screws from the sides while supporting the hard drive to ensure it does not fall.
- Carefully remove the hard drive from the case.
- You can usually identify the hard drive by a sticker on the bottom which should have hardware specifications.
- To replace the drive, slide it back into its slot, screw it in, then replace the cables.
