Show Notes

Hardware GPS devices are gadgets that allow you to tap in to a

satellite network

to see where you are on ground level. GPS units are generally battery powered and can be carried around by hand but are primarily used within cars for navigation. To use a GPS in a car, you'll need to get it mounted in a way that is both convenient and safe for the driver.

Many manufacturers sell an optional car kit or include one with the GPS device itself. This typically includes a mounting bracket for the unit with a suction cup that allows the device to be stuck to the windshield or to a mounting plate that can be stuck on to the dashboard. Because the device will run out of power eventually, it will also come with a charger that either plugs into an outlet at home or into the cigarette lighter.

Once the GPS unit is installed in the car, you can turn it on and it will scan for satellites. This might take a little while depending on your surroundings. Once it's locked on to the satellites, you'll see your position on a map and when you move the map will move according to your position. The GPS device will generally come preloaded with a variety of maps that include roads and streets along with street names and addresses.

A GPS device can be loaded with a home address or with a number of favorite locations you might frequent like work, the mall, etc. When navigating to a new location, you'll be asked to enter what city you want to navigate to and then enter a street, then a number. Options will pop up as you type. Once your address is entered, you can select whether to take detours, avoid highways or prefer highway routes. Many GPS units also give voice feedback like "turn left" and newer models even read out street names to you.

Many GPS devices will also offer up traffic updates for a subscription fee. This can help you to

navigate around traffic jams

and

shorten your routes

. Also, if you're planning to take your GPS out of the country, then you might need to update your map data by

buying new maps

. Consider this before deciding on a GPS unit that you want to purchase.
