Using Gmail with your email program

Gmail doesn't have to be confined to your web browser. You can also set Gmail up so that you can send and receive messages using the desktop email client you're most comfortable with. That could be Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or even a mobile email client like those included in the iPhone, BlackBerry or other popular handset. Following a few simple steps, it's easy to get your Gmail messages sent to your desktop or mobile email client.

Using POP

- Click on the Settings link in the upper right corner of the Gmail window. In the Settings window, choose the Forwarding POP/IMAP tab.

- In the POP Download (Post Office Protocol) section, choose to enable POP for all mail (past, present and future) or just for mail that arrives from now on.

- In the pulldown menu, select whether to keep a copy of your email in Gmail, to archive your Gmail mail or to delete Gmail's copy as messages are delivered to your email client. As you have plenty of Gmail storage at your disposal, either of the first two options are likely best.

- Under Configure your email client, select the Configuration instructions link and select the email client you wish to set up. Gmail will give step-by-step instructions that give a thorough walk-through for configuring your chosen email client. See our overview of setting up POP email in Outlook Express with practical tips that pertain to other email clients too.

Using IMAP (recommended)

- In the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab of the Gmail settings window, choose the radio button for Enable IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol). This option allows you to interact with your Gmail with either your desktop client or through the Gmail interface. Changes made in Gmail (i.e. reading or deleting a message) will propagate to your email client and vice-versa.

- Under the IMAP Access section of the Forwarding and POP/IMAP window select Configuration instructions for a step-by-step guide to configuring popular email clients to work with your Gmail account.
