Using the Reader application on your Tablet S

Pt. 4 of 3 | 3:53 |

How do I use the Sony Tablet S

Wednesday September 21, 2011
One of the more appealing aspects of

Sony's Tablet S

is the fact that it also seconds as an ebook reader. While this is nothing new to the tablet market, the fact that Sony already had a hand in the ebook space means that users of Sony's services will find it even easier to get at their digital libraries. Not only that, but Sony's past experience with ebook readers means they know how to make the user interface click.

Sony has its own ebook store, which makes getting ebooks on the Tablet S even easier. In fact, if you already had a subscription to this service you can easily port over all of your old reading material.

To read your ebooks, Sony has provided the aptly named Reader application. You can get to it from the Reader button on one of the home screens or by choosing Reader from the apps menu. When you first launch the app, you'll be brought to a Featured Books page. This will show some of the books in your library, if you have one, and some recommendations. Tap My Books to see your whole library.

Tap Store to get more books through the tablet's browser. Here, you can sort books by category, specials, best sellers and so on. Tap a book for more information. Add a book to your cart if you're interested in an item. Hit Checkout to purchase the books in your cart, though you'll need to register first if you have not already done so.

When reading a book, there are two ways to do so: in portrait mode or landscape mode. Most will opt for portrait, but landscape gives a nice two-page spread. Swipe the screen or tap to change pages. You can also bring up a scroller at the bottom that allows you to quickly browse through the book. The menu that you can bring up also provides options for brightness, font size and page orientation. You can also highlight text by tapping and dragging. You'll also have the option of bookmarking pages by tapping the upper-right corner or the upper-left corner for the left page in landscape mode. Tap the right-facing arrow in the menu for other options to navigate the book including a table of contents, index and so on.
