Using the Samsung Galaxy Tab

Friday November 19, 2010
The Samsung Galaxy Tab is not the first Android tablet. However, it's the first Android tablet coming from a major manufacturer, the first mass market effort for Android tablets and the first Android tablet that can actually give the iPad a run for its money. We run through a hardware and software tour of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, take a look at apps optimized to run on the Galaxy Tab's 7-inch screen, email and SMS on the Tab as well as taking pics and videos with the 1.3MP front camera and the 5MP back camera.

Show Notes

- Initial boot-up takes about 20 seconds from power-on to homescreen.

- The Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 7-inch capacitive LCD touchscreen; not an AMOLED screen as was rumoured.

On the left:
- Microphone

On the bottom:
- Speakers
- Dock / charge and sync cable connector

On the right:
- Power button
- Volume rocker
- MicroSD card slot
- SIM card slot (standard size, not micro SIM)

On the back:
- 5MP camera with flash

On the top:
- Four-stage headphone / mic jack

On the front:
- 1.3MP front-mounted camera
- Brightness sensor
- Four capacitive touch buttons for Settings, Home, Back and Search. These buttons are context specific.

- Samsung has created several apps designed specifically for the Galaxy Tab's 7-inch screen.

- Keep an eye on the Samsung Apps market for more 7-inch optimized apps as they're released.

- Split-screen apps work like a normal mobile app in portrait mode.

- Unique to the Tab and some of the apps designed to run on it, turning the device into landscape mode will give a different configuration; Mail, for example, gives an independent scrollable list of your messages on the left and a message preview on the right.

- There is a 3.2 megapixel camera located on the back of the Tab and a 1.3 megapixel camera in the front.

- No dedicated button is available to access the camera but it can be accessed using the Camera application.

- Once in the camera, you'll notice that the buttons don't rotate to match orientation so you'll probably find landscape mode the best.

- The camera has several shooting modes available including single shot, continuous, panorama and smile shot. Self-shot is used to activate the front-mounted camera.

- There are also several scene modes including portrait, landscape, night and sports. Flash options are also available and the exposure value can be increased or decreased.

- In the settings menu, you can change the resolution, add effects and more.

- When preparing a shot, you'll see a slider on the upper-right corner that allows you to switch back and forth from still camera and video camera.

- The email application is located in the dock by default. It can also be accessed in the applications list.

- When in the email, you can view your inbox using a fairly standard display. Rotate your Tab 90 degrees, however, and you get a two-pane view that allows you to preview emails.

- The email interface is straight-forward and easy to use, with buttons that allow you to archive, delete or respond to messages with just a couple of taps.

- You can also begin composing an email with just the touch of a button. A handy address book button allows you to select frequently used recipients to send to. Of course, you can also add attachments if you wish.

- In the Settings, you can also change your signature and change other options.

- If you select Messaging from the applications list, you'll be able to send messages to whoever you want and you'll be able to add attachments there too.

- The browser can be found in the dock at the bottom by default. URLs can be accessed by keying in the address or by using the microphone to tell the browser where to go.

- The browser offers the standard buttons including back and forward buttons, a refresh button and a button to activate tabbed browsing.

- Searches can be performed by typing search terms into the address bar and recent searches will be saved for later viewing. You can also bookmark favorite pages by clicking the bookmarks button at the upper-right where you can also access most-visited sites or view your history.

- Tapping the Settings button will allow you to view recent downloads, search the current page and more.

- Back on the home screen, just tap and hold to bring up a menu that you can use to add widgets and shortcuts or to change your wallpaper. Widgets and shortcuts can be removed by tapping and dragging to the trash icon.
