With the built-in infrared sensor on the Sony Tablet S, the device will work as a functional home theater remote. While Sony does give some preference to its own brand of devices, the Tablet S will still work as a remote control for other brands as well.

To get started, open up the Remote control app either by tapping the remote icon in the upper-left or by selecting it from the apps list. Choose Easy registration if you want to pick your device from a list, then tap Next. Choose the category of your device (what type of device it is) then choose a manufacturer. Tap Next once you've selected those.

Now, you may be informed that there are multiple remote types, so keep in mind that you can try them out to see what works for you. Next, you can also set gesture features if you want so that certain shortcuts are available when you swipe or tap. Next, select an icon for this remote setup. You can also test your remote if you want to be absolutely sure it will work. Tap Finish once you're done. You'll see your device appear on the main screen of the remote application. Tap Register device to add a new device here.

There is another way to setup a remote control, though it will require that you have your physical remote handy. Now, tap Learn from a remote control. Once again, choose the category of your device and tap Next. Now, you'll see a grayed out remote. Tap one of the buttons and then you'll want to tap the corresponding button on your physical remote while pointing it at your Tablet S' IR sensor. If there's a problem, you'll get an error message but if not, the button should be assigned. It is usually best to go through this process on a flat surface so that there are no errors. You can also assign functions to any blank buttons or buttons with words on them. You can also set up gesture commands here as well.

You'll notice back at the main menu of the remote app that there is a power button above each remote. Quickly tap this to turn the corresponding device on and off. Tap the device icon to see the full remote. In the upper-right you can switch to the gesture screen and in the upper-left you have the option of changing remotes without exiting to the main menu.
