You'll find yourself in the start screen where you'll see a number of tiles each representing different functions or activities. Things like People,
Your full app list is accessed by either tapping the right arrow button or by swiping left with your finger. If you see any of these that you'd like easier access to, you can tap and hold to see more options. These options can include pin to start, which allows you to create a start screen shortcut, or uninstall for when you want to uninstall an app permanently.
When you want to navigate Windows Phone 7, the back and Windows buttons at the bottom of your HD7 are what you'll use. The back button will take you to the previous menu or screen while the Windows button will take you straight back to the start screen.

Now, you can move it to your desired position. You can also tap the button in the upper-right of the tile to delete them.
