What is a 404?

As you travel around the Internet, visiting Web sites, occasionally you'll get a "404." It could be an image heavy page, it could be just text. It might be funny, it might be serious.

- 404 is an HTTP error code.

- It means that the requested page doesn't exist.

- In many cases, it is assumed that the user typed in the wrong Web address.

- In some cases, it's just that the page is no longer there.

- Some sites have tried to make their 404 pages colorful or funny.

- Other sites, like Tucows, don't use the number, but let you know the page isn't there.
