The terms used to describe sizes on computers can be confusing. Bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, even tera and petabytes. What do all these terms mean and how do they relate to each other? Doc Callahan explains.

- b = bit = From the term Binary Digit
- A "bit" is the simplest digital storage. Either 0 or 1. On or Off. True or False.
- B = BYTE = 8 Bits - A character, like "b" is 8 bits or 1 byte
- K = Kilobyte = 1,024 bytes
- MB = Megabyte = 1,000 K or KB or 1,048,576 bytes
- GB = Gigabyte = 1,000 MB or 1,073,741,824 bytes
- TB = Terabyte = 1,000 GB or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

1985 - 360 K floppy disc held 368,640 bytes
2009 - 4.2 GB DVD holds 4,509,715,660 bytes
