checksum

listed by each file you can download. That's all well and good, but

? Turns out, it's a great way to make sure the file you downloaded is exactly the same as the original and that no transmission errors have cropped up. Michael "Doctor File Finder" Callahan explains.

Show Notes

- A

checksum is an alpha-numeric string that is calculated based on the characteristics of a file

.

- No two different files would have the same checksum.

- The checksum is used to test the accuracy and validity of a file transfer.

- There are different types of checksum generation like MD5SUM and SHA1SUM.

- You can find software on the Internet that will calculate the checksum of a file.

- You can check the checksum of the file you downloaded against the file that was on the site.

- If the checksums match then your download is totally accurate and valid.
