- Operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux call the main screen the desktop.
- This metaphor was used because they wanted the operating system to display the things you'd have on a real desk.
- These things include a calculator, a calendar, your documents, papers, notes, etc.
- It was believed the desktop would have a familiar feel to it.
- They could have called it Primary Operating System Interface, but desktop sounds better.
