- In the early days of computers, there were no folders as we know them.
- Under DOS, the containers that held files were called "directories."
- The main directory of the hard drive was called the root directory.
- The command to find out what was in a directory is "DIR", which stands for directory.
- For all intents and purposes, the word directory should be considered interchangeable with folder.
