- A "file association" is a connection between a certain file type and a certain program.

- For example, by default all TXT files are opened with Notepad, which comes with Windows.

- If you double-click on a file with an extension of TXT it will automatically open in Notepad.

- Many other file types have assocations with a particular program by default.

- For example DOC files are associated with Microsoft Word.

- BMP files are associated with Microsoft Paint.

- File associations can be changed and this is shown in another tutorial.

- File associations make it easy to open a file in the program it's associated with simply by double-clicking on the file.
