What is a hard drive partition?

A

disk partition

allows you to take one big hard drive and

divide it into multiple virtual hard drives

. You could, for example,

dual-boot

Windows and Ubuntu by installing one operating system on each partition. You could also have your operating system on one partition and keep your all your data on another partition.

show notes

- See the Wikipedia article referenced in this tutorial.

- The easiest way to think of disk partitioning is to think of partitioning a physical space with a wall, like dividing one room into two.

- See our 5-part series on Manage Hard Drive Partitions with EASUS Partition Manager for detail on how to easily partition a hard drive.
