When you get into computers and on the Internet, you find there are many types of addresses. Internal IP addresses, external IP addresses, Web addresses, and then something called a MAC Address.

- MAC stands for "Media Access Control".
- The MAC address is a unique identifier that's assigned to each network interface card (NIC).
- If you go into your router setup, you can find your MAC address, generally under Status.
- Because it's unique, the MAC address can be used for security.
- In your router, it's possible to turn on MAC address filtering.
- With this enabled, you could create a list of approved MAC addresses that could access your network.
- In this case, if a computers MAC address was not on the approved list it could not access the network.
