What is a motherboard?

Motherboard is another one of those weird computer terms that may seem to have no definable etymology. However, the term makes a lot of sense once it's been explained. Your house is built on a foundation. The foundation supports everything else that goes into the house. Electrical, plumbing and more. Think of the motherboard as the foundation of your personal computer.

show notes

- The motherboard is a printed circuit board.

- It's also sometimes called the system board.

- The motherboard is the foundation for your computer.

- Early motherboards contained very little, other than the CPU (Central Processing Unit).

- With these, you had to install cards for nearly everything, including floppy drives, graphics, sound, hard drives, and so on.

- Modern motherboards now contain graphics, sound, DVD controllers and much more as part of their architecture.

- This means that modern motherboards are much more comprehensive and you need cards for fewer peripherals.
