- You can think of each port number as being a phone number.
- Ports are used on networks to communicate between a client and a server.
- Ports allow data to be transmitted efficiently.
- Port numbers are from 0 to 65535.
- Ports 0 to 1024 are reserved for use by certain privileged services.
- Examples include SMTP = 25, POP = 110, FTP = 21.
- In the picture of a switchboard the connectors on the switchboard would be "ports".
- The cable connectors can be thought of as the information that's going to a specific port.
- On a network, ports are used to route information to specific places just as phone numbers route calls to specific people.
