Show Notes

- A server is a combination of hardware and software that provides services over the network.

- Just as a server in a restaurant provides you with the food you request, a computer server provides you with the information you request.

- Most servers run special server software, but you can run a Web server on a laptop.

- Most large Web sites, like Tucows, run multiple servers.

- A server is sometimes called a host because it is hosting the information.

- The person requesting the information is called a client.

- When you visit butterscotch.com, our servers serve up the pages you request... and there's no need to tip!

Well Carl I guess it's all a matter of perspective. I've been in computers since they ran CP/M, which was before DOS. In a sense I "grew up" with the technology. Monitors didn't have color, computers didn't have hard drives, and your display was only 40 characters wide. As for all the operating systems I think that's just a matter of feeling comfortable with it. It's like if you play the guitar it's easier for you to learn the mandolin. You feel comfortable with chords, etc. For me same is true with operating systems. Having used DOS and Windows it wasn't much of a stretch for me to use Mac, Linux, and all the mobile platforms. I love what I do. I love looking at and evaluating software and I love helping people see that technology is not as hard as it seems. It's notes from people like you that make it all worthwhile. ....Doc

Okay I give. Doc? How is it possible you know all this stuff? I have a hard enuff time tryin to muddle through windows yet I've watched, and learned from, tutorials from you on windows, linux, mac, blackberrys, iphones, and even the Android. Then you explain servers and hosts and dns and I'm just bowled over. Keep it up man cuz I don't know how you do it but I surely appreciate it. Carl
