On a network, large or small, every computer has to have a

unique IP address

. You can assign those manually or you can let DHCP do it. Choosing to use DHCP means we don't have to worry about reconfiguring our network every time we connect a new device.

Show Notes

-

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

.

- DHCP is used by your router to automatically assign IP addresses to devices.

- It is possible to set IP addresses manually from DOS using the IPCONFIG command.

- It is much easier, however, to let DHCP do it for you.

- You can log into your router to check DHCP settings.

- In most cases you can set the beginning IP address, like 192.168.1.100.

- You can also set how many addresses DHCP is allowed to assign, like 50.

- When devices go to access your network, they are automatically assigned a unique IP address.

- Two devices are not allowed to have the same IP address.

- DHCP makes it easy for laptops, desktops, and mobile devices to function on your network.

- Note that the IP address is assigned by DHCP after the device has passed the security requirements.
